John Herbert DeVoe was born on 26 April 1865 in Tarrytown, New York.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Isaac DeVoe and Cordelia A. Oakley.5

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 20 June 1870 at Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of his father.6

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 21 June 1880 at North Tarrytown, Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of his father; his occupation is recorded as "In Shoe factory."7

John Herbert DeVoe married Edith Edna Tompkins, daughter of Thomas T. Tompkins and Catherine ____, on 21 June 1888 at 7 Harmon Street, White Plains, Westchester County, New York.1,8,3 John Herbert DeVoe and Edith Edna Tompkins lived at 5 Harmon Street, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, beginning about 1895, in a house built by his father.3

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 21 June 1900 at Greenburgh Township, Westchester County, New York, living with his family in the household of his widowed father-in-law.9 He was a clerk according to the 1900 census.9

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 15 April 1910 at 5 Harmon Street, White Plains Village, Westchester County, New York, where his home was shown as owned and mortgaged.10 He was a salesman at a grocery store according to the 1910 census.10

John Herbert DeVoe appears in a photograph of a fourth-of-July picnic at the Anderson estate on Post Road in White Plains, probably taken around 1918.11

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 14 January 1920 at 5 Harmon Street, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, where his home was described as owned and mortgaged.12 He was a foreman at a lumber company according to the January 1920 census.12

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 19 April 1930 at 5 Harmon Street, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, where his house was shown as owned and of value 17,000.13 He was a supervisor at a lumber yard according to the April 1930 census.13

In 1938, on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, a newspaper article included the following information about Mr. and Mrs. J. Herbert DeVoe: They were active members of the Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church. J. Herbert had been affiliated with the White Plains Council, No. 20, Junior Order United American Mechanics since 1892, and had been the treasurer for the past 32 years. At one time he had also been treasurer of the White Plains Board of Education.3

John Herbert DeVoe appears in a family photograph possibly taken at the time of his and his wife's fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1938.

John Herbert DeVoe appeared on the census of 22 April 1940 at Armonk, Westchester County, New York, in the household of his son Albert LeRoy DeVoe.14

John Herbert DeVoe died on 16 October 1941 at age 76.2,15,4
