Ida Mannetta DeVoe

Ida Mannetta DeVoe was also known as "Ida Mannettie." She was born on 5 July 1863.1,2,3,4 She was the daughter of Isaac DeVoe and Cordelia A. Oakley.5

Ida was deaf and dumb. It was Marion DeVoe's understanding that she picked her ears when she was a baby. She wasn't able to take care of herself because she couldn't hear. She had sign language, although Marion never saw her use it.6

Ida Mannetta DeVoe appeared on the census of 20 June 1870 at Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of her father; the box for "whether deaf and dumb" was not checked.7 Her highest grade of school completed was seventh grade elementary school.8

Ida Mannetta DeVoe appeared on the census of 21 June 1880 at North Tarrytown, Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of her father; she is recorded as "at home", and the columns "Deaf and dumb," "Can not read," and "Can not write" are checked.9 Marion DeVoe remembered that Ida lived with her sister Bertha Grogan and Jacob Grogan somewhere in New Jersey: "The Grogans were very good to her. They gave her a wonderful home and did everything they could for her."6 When Bertha Grogan died in 1932, Ida went to live with Eva and Frank DeVoe in White Plains.6

Ida Mannetta DeVoe appeared on the census of 22 May 1940 at 36 Davis Avenue, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, in the household of her brother Frank Quinlan DeVoe.8

Ida Mannetta DeVoe died on 2 April 1945 at 36 Davis Avenue, White Plains, Westchester County, New York, at age 81; a newspaper clipping marked "4-5-1945" in pencil states she died the date before.2,10,3 She died of appendicitis, after much suffering.11
