Gilman, First Settlers of Upper Georgia, tells an elaborate story of Benjamin. He was an officer with Washington at Princeton, captured at Charleston. Martha was Zach's fiance when Benjamin carted her away. Zach left for SC because of it. Benjamin moved to GA in 1784. Became President of the Senate, member of Congress, and judge of the Georgia Supreme Court.

Gilmer, Sketches of First Settlers of Upper Georgia, p. 126, says he was "very handsome -- had the manners, and wore the dress, of a well-bred gentleman. He read and enjoyed novels and plays, and fashioned his habits accordingly." Lived near Broad River, close to Thomas Gilmer. Gilmer describes his second wife as a "miser." She "counted her gold by stockings full, upon condition that she would allow him enough of her gold to enable him to feast his animal appetites."
