Capt. William is a justice of Caroline Court and sheriff of the county. He probates his father-in-law's will in Middlesex and probably owns a quarter there (see COB notice on slaves of Wm T in Middlesex). The quarter may have come from inheritance. Whether he is the Wm who witnesses deeds for George Mason in King George and who takes bond as guardian of Katherine Rymer is less clear. Since George Mason is his step-nephew it would make some sense that he is the one. William lives on the Peumansend. He is probably has a plantation there and also builds a mill on the Peumansend.

Virginia Geneaology-Tylers, p. 504 says that William is the son of William and Katherine Hay and dies in 1778 [Smith says at the Battle of Brandywine]. I think this is incorrect. There seems to be but one William kicking around King and Queen County between about 1740 and 1760. He is active on the vestry board. He dies between February and November 1760. His will lists minor sons which means they had to be born after 1740. It seems odd that he would be so old when family starts and William (1718) could not be his son if it were 1694 dying. A couple years later the second William is on the vestry board and a while later Phillip. By 1767, only William and Phillip are assigned seats by the vestry board when the new church is put up (Stratton Major Parish Vestry Book, p. 167). This suggests that William and Phillip the sons are these two. This would seem to be compelling case unless the son William has died before 1767. So I am concluding that the William who dies in 1760 is William b. 1718. If all this is true, then is William b. 1718 still the son of William (1694) and does William (1694) die earlier? Or is he the William north of the river and the unaccounted for Hay become his son. George Harrison Sanford King in a letter to W. Festus Morgan dated 3 Mar 1961 (VHS) writes that Col. William is the son of William son of John the Ranger who is born in 1708-10 and dies in 1760. Col. William is the one who marries Elizabeth Holden and dies in 1778 at Brandywine. Thus he believes that the children listed here are the children of William (b. 1708-10) and the child William here is in fact this William. The date 1710 for birth of John the Ranger's son seems very late. He is active in his father's estate. Harry Taliaferro reasons William's birthdate from two sources. A letter from William Woodford to William Taliaferro dated December 1, 1723/24, and the survey dividing the Peumansend property on 26 Feb 1723/24. He concludes the former indicates William was already producing tobacco and the latter seems a sign of majority.

Data in the suit later filed by Dr. John T's adm indicates that William died early in the year 1810. Norbornne and John were granted adm 12 Feb 1810. Also in these papers, Jane is listed as his mother, so it would seem that all the children of Roberts were children of Janes.
