The T v T suit documents that Richard is s of John (1656). The defendants in the suit include Rose T, widow. The other children are listed as children of John. Richard drowned while crossing the Potomac on a raft. The body must have washed up on shore, however. Reverend Rose reported going to his house to see the body lying in state. The narrative which accompanies the Charles T Family Bible (dated 1870) says that Richard travelled several times to Amherst County, had a quarter there, built a house there, but never lived there.

Richard was the seafaring Taliaferro. There is considerable evidence for a steady commerce with the Bahamas and Barbados and in his wife's will evidence of some connection with pirates.

Look at John Catlett will, dates 18 Nov 1724, in Essex Wills. I appears that the Martha who is granddaughter is his, which would make Elizabeth a Catlett. T v T implies that Robert died shortly after Zachary and before Lawrence. This is the part of the case, however, that is most susceptible to perjery.

Often Robert's birth date is listed as 1698. This comes from his tombstone. "Here lies Robert Taliaferro Son of Francis and Elizabeth Taliaferro who Departed this Life the 9th of May 1726 in the 28th year of his age." The stone is at Eagle's Nest, the Fitzhugh Estate in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford (now King George) County VA. The St. Paul Parish Register indicates he died (or was buried) on 9 Jun 1726.

Some sources list three daughters Elizabeth, Mary, and Martha. This is probably from Spotsylvania Will Bk A:91 which is a will for Robert listing these three daughters. Robert with these three daughters has a brother John alive in 1727, however, so it could not be this Robert. It is Robert, s of John the Ranger. There is considerable dispute about Robert's date of birth. Luciano argues persuasively that Robert is the oldest of the children. This would make sense because Robert becomes guardian of the minor children upon his father's death. It is strange, however, that Robt the immigrant puts the distribution of land in the hands of Francis if he is not the oldest. Robert seems to be the merchant in the family. Evidence is that he established the trading business at Peumansend, although this may have been set up by his son instead. Robert is alive in June 1687 and dead in June 1688.

Robert seems to be in the trading business and early seems to be reasonably successful. The records of his trading indicate heavy trading in counties north of the river including King George and Richmond. His wives come from north of the river. In 1738, Robert is in his 50s and the business seems to sour. Robert is a prime candidate for some additional children. Among those that are possibilities are Felix, William and Richard who are in Wm and Mary from King George, perhaps even our William and John.
