William Walpole married Mary Burnett, daughter of William Burnett and Rachel Durrant, on 1 January 1847 in Scotch Plains, New Jersey; the minister was the Rev. William Lock.4,5,6
He and his wife resided first in Scotch Plains, New Jersey; then moved in 1853 to Bedford, and lived there at least until Mrs. Walpole's death in 1886 except for five years spent in Unionville [Hawthorne, New York]. Their home for several years before Mrs. Walpole's death was at Cantito Corners.7

Marion DeVoe and Rachel (Troup) Watson believed that William Walpole was the superintendent of the John Jay home near Katonah, now the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site. Marion told Howard DeVoe "I don't think he lived there - from what Aunt Mary [Mary Cargon Mayne] said, I think he lived out at the Four Corners which is just beyond there. They had a house there. I don't think they lived on the Jay property, unless maybe the property extended over there at the time."12 A March 1879 newspaper article stated that he formerly managed the Jay farm.13
