William Burnett was born on 16 January 1784.1 He was the son of Thomas Burnett and Ann Oldring.

William Burnett was married to Rachel Durrant, daughter of Simon Durrant and Rachel Morling, by the Revd Mr. Gibbs on 20 December 1808 at Beccles, Suffolk, England.1 William Burnett was a tailor in 1823 in Bungay, Suffolk, England.4
William Burnett arrived in New York, New York, on 30 August 1834 on the ship Saint John from Liverpool together with six of his children.5 His occupation was shown as a tailor on the 1834 passenger list.5
William Burnett appeared on the census of 1 August 1850 at Westfield Township, Essex County, New Jersey, in the household of his son-in-law, where he was shown as a taylor.6
William Burnett died on 9 January 1862 at age 77.2,3 He was buried in Buxton Cemetery, Bedford Township, Westchester County, New York.2,3,7
