William Henry DeVoe

William Henry DeVoe was born on 17 March 1868.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Isaac DeVoe and Cordelia A. Oakley.5

William Henry DeVoe appeared on the census of 20 June 1870 at Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of his father.6

William Henry DeVoe appeared on the census of 21 June 1880 at North Tarrytown, Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of his father; he is shown as "at home" and "attended school within the census year."7

William Henry DeVoe married Jennie Mary Hopper, daughter of John D. Hopper and Mary Ellen Van Houten, on 10 September 1894 in Harrison, Essex County, New Jersey.1,8

William Henry DeVoe appeared on the census of 23 April 1910 at 183 Brunswick Street, Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, in which he was described as a sheet metal worker.9

In 1915 William, Jennie, and Hazel were at North 6th Street in Newark (1915 NJ State Census, Sheet 15, Reference Number L-05; Film Number 21.)8

Frank Kenneth DeVoe called William Henry DeVoe his "talking uncle," and described him as "the sheet metal man."10,11

William Henry DeVoe appeared on the census of 23 January 1920 at 257 Greylock Avenue, Belleville, Essex County, New Jersey, in which he was described as a contractor.12

William (a sheet metal worker) and Jennie were listed in the 1934 City Directory of Newark at 688 Stuyvesant Avenue.8

Frank Kenneth DeVoe said that his Uncle Bill (William Henry DeVoe), his Uncle Fred, and his father tended to argue together: "Those three together were something, because they could each one find a different side to take."13 His Uncle Bill was the most obstinate of all.13

William Henry DeVoe lived in July 1945 in Irvington, New Jersey.14 He lived in November 1955 in California.15

William Henry DeVoe died on 31 January 1956 in Orange County, California, at age 87.3,8
