Streptomyces is a gram positive, filamentous bacteria commonly found in potting soils and composts. Starch-caesin agar was very successful in enriching for and reproducing viable streptomyces colonies, including antibiotic-producing colonies. Colonies exhibiting the typical morphological characteristics of Streptomyces were tested using various assays to verify their identity. These assays gave insight to the physical structure, the gram nature, motility, and metabolism of the bacteria. Among the most popular were recognition of an earthy, musty, odor and the filamentous branching structure of the organism. Results from these tests led to the identification of an antibiotic-producing species of Streptomyces. Preliminary results from the antibiotic tests indicate the isolation and production of two distinct antibiotics.
