Week 5 Lesson Plan
This week campers went over some things learned, checked out photography in space, used a microscope to look at miniscule things and began to pull together their culmination.
Maryland State Curriculum-
- Science-
Make something out of paper, cardboard, wood, plastic, metal, or existing objects that can actually be used to perform a task.- Children worked to make a camera obscura from multiple materials and then used it to observe an inverted image. - Reading-
Summarize the text or a portion of the text and Plan and deliver effective oral presentations During readers workshop teams selected an information book on photography, chose a few interesting facts and shared them with the group. - Math-
Recognize and apply the properties/attributes of plane geometric figures At the Visitor's Center Campers learned a hexagon shape was used in the James Webb Telescope because it is a shape in nature that works well to help the telescope fold. - Geography-
Describe places using weather, climate, vegetation and natural/physical features, such as mountain, beach and plain Nik's Mom printed out poster sized satellite images of the CYC. Children discussed where physical features etcetera were located and what time of year the images were taken.
Thank you letter to our tour guide.
Week 5
Camera Obscura
The concept of the Camera Obscura had been brought up earlier when Mr. Chris talked to the children. This time they had an opportunity to make their own using tubes. The Camera Obscura uses the basic concept behind modern cameras. Light passes through a small hole and can be projected upon a flat surface. The image that is projected is upside down similar to how the eye sees. A camera obscura made from an old shoe box was experimented with too.
Nasa Visitor's Center
At the Visitor's Center campers were able to view images taken from space. The tour guide, Mr. Buckingham, taught the children about different kinds of light. He said not all light is visible and the space cameras can capture some of this nonvisable light in their images. He said that the camera headed for space in the James Web Telescope would be the size of a piano since it had to endure extreme temperatures and take pictures deep in space.
Kazumi-"We went inside of a space capsule." Ayda- "Astronauts wear the helmets because of meteorites, heat and cold." Katie- "They are working on something that will take pictures in space (James Web Telescope). It will launch in 5 years" Seneca- "I remember we went close to a photograph of the Moon and it got hotter and hotter because when the stars get together they burst and release lots of hot gas."
Video Recording-
The children discovered the video recording mode on their cameras and some have had fun recording each other. After seeing the images of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the National Portrait Gallery, one girl did a video tape interview of a teacher, Ms. Gonzalez, who had been at the King march on Washington in 1963. This video becomes even more poignant because this month marks the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington where King delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
Writing About a Photograph
Children choose photographs from images taken during camp to use in a writing assignment. Some wrote about what was happening in the picture and memories of camp and friends. Katie found two identical photographs of herself and wrote a story about an imaginary twin.
Read Katie's Story
My Twin by Katie
Chapter 1 My Twin
This is my twin Kate and me. We look very alike. Sometimes my mom and dad get mixed up. But I like terriers and she likes Golden Retrievers. We have light brown hair, light brown eyes, have same clothes, nice smile, and we wear ponytails. We both go to the same school.
Chapter 2 Our Pets
Me and Kate love dogs a lot, so much we got a Terrier and a Golden Retriever. We named them Rebecca and Beth. Rebecca is my dog and Beth is Kate’s. We love them so much. We also got a Guinea Pig named Meredith. She is blonde, light brown, and white. We read to our dogs every Sunday and we have a fish named Claire. We love our pets. Our mom is a librarian. She gave us a book about all our pets. She made it for us. We have two cats Vanilla and Chocolate. We are pet lovers.
The lifeguard always gets mixed up. We love writing. We have ten journals and six secret journals.

We love Monopoly and Bingo and our favorite movie is Happy Feet One. Our favorite books are I am a Bunny, Madeline and Stewart Little. Our favorite food is Pizza, salad, and parmesan chicken. Our favorite vacation places are Montana, Ireland, California, South Carolina and Germany. Our favorite TV shows are Clifford, Sofia the First, Sponge Bob and Scooby Doo Mystery Inc. We do not like super heroes. We don’t like to clean up our dogs spills from their food. I do not like to go to the Doctor or dentist.
Chapter 4 People We Like
My friend is Facundo, he is my best, best, bbbeeeesssst friend ever. Kate’s is Emma. (Emma is also my friend.) Our teacher is very nice. Our school is very cool and most of all we love each other.
The End.
Taking Apart Cameras
The Panthers had a lot of fun taking apart old cameras. In the process they learned a little more about the parts of a camera including the sensors, lens and the shutter. Watching a short video about how digital cameras are made helped with the comprehension even more.
Sun Sensitive Paper and Fabric
To help understand how film develops campers used sun sensitive paper. Sun sensitive paper fades during exposure to light due to a chemical reaction. Each child chose small objects to create their own sun prints. Campers used rubber animals, cars, plants etc on their designs. A timer was used to make sure the paper had the correct amount of UV exposure. Thank you to Evelyn's Mom who donated the sun sensitive fabric.
Green Committee Notes
Work began on the The R's videos. Lessons were learned as the children began to act out their parts and reviewed the recordings. There is a lot of work to be done before the showing debut next week!
