Week 1 Lesson Plan

During this Phase I of our project, we assessed the children's prior knowledge of photography. To do this, we constructed a web and filled it with the children's ideas.

On Thursday cameras were introduced. Children were put into teams to share a digital camera. A diagram of a camera was labeled so they could be familiar with the buttons and "toggles" on a generic camera. Afterward they went on a picnic to a nearby garden and had a chance to try the digital cameras out. The next day a tour of the UM Chapel garden gave everyone a chance to take more photographs and also document their trip.

Green Committee Notes

painting a rain barrelAs a Maryland Green School, The Center for Young Children is committed to having a group of children on their Green Committee which is also comprised of teachers, UM students, administrators and members of the community. When presented with this choice the Purple Panthers unanimously decided to join.

At their first committee meeting the Panthers talked about what they already do to help take care of the Earth . They were then asked to help design decorations for a rain barrel that had been bought by the PTA. Each child did an original drawing on paper first and later during the week they painted it directly onto the rain barrel.
