Week 2 Lesson Plan
During this Phase II of our project, we began to investigate photography by using cameras and talking to a professional.
Maryland State Curriculum-
- Math- recognize and Identify and describe quadrilaterals such as: squares, rectangles, rhombi. Children solidified their knowledge about shapes by searching them out to photograph them while we were at the CSPAC.
- Social Studies- Identify goods and services provided by businesses. We learned about the services of a professional photographer and investigated the business by recreating a photo session using play money to "purchase" the photographs.
- Listening- Students will demonstrate effective listening to learn, process, and analyze information. After Mr. Skippers presentation, students wrote in their journal about what they had learned.
Mr. Skippers Portraits
Week 2
This week starts Phase II of our project. Billy "Skipper" Hughs, a professional photographer, came into the class to answer some questions they had. He showed the Purple Panthers about the "rule of thirds" and some different types of cameras. He told the children to take pictures of things they liked and that since photography was an art, that not everyone would necessarily like their photo but plenty of people would. Mr. Skipper showed a slide show of some of his photography and then created a mini photography studio in the dramatic play area where he took photos of each child posing as they wanted. Afterwards the children enjoyed taking pictures of each other in a similar way.
An underwater camera was purchased for the room and it was passed around during pool time so that everyone could practice and enjoy taking pictures.
Many children brought special pictures from home and shared them with the class. One child brought pictures of her and her brother because she enjoyed playing with him. Another child brought photographs taken by his Uncle who is a professional photographer living in another country. The discussion continued about what makes a picture a good one.
On Friday the class walked to The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center to take pictures of the garden and building. Inside of the building Purple Panthers were assigned to take photos of shapes to be incorporated into another project..
Green Committee Notes
This week the Green Committee agreed to work toward national recognition as an Eco-School USA sponsored by the NWF. Students broke into groups and completed a three page audit check list with 10 categories including Energy, Consumption , Waste and Healthy Living. Needless to say the CYC did well on the audit. Afterwards the Panthers took pictures to document things around the school that related to the audit such as recycling containers and bike racks. Next week they plan to discuss the audit and come up with a "green" project.
