this	-This means readers have to figure out the referent.
that	-Doing that means more processes for the reader to manage.
these	-These aren't impossible to accomplish, but do require more work.
those	-Those that the writer fills in while revising helps the reader.

Certain quantifiers can be used anaphorically.

some	-Some aren't too hard to figure out.
many	-Many are harder for the reader than the writer would think.
few	-Few would be made worse by the writer filling in the referent.
