Mary Harriette Cargon was born on 2 March 1877.1 She was the daughter of William H. Cargon and Harriett Ann Walpole.
Mary Harriette Cargon appeared on the census of 2 June 1880 at Bedford Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of her father.2 A photograph in the possession of Linda (Funk) Shook apparently shows her and her brother as young children. She became a member of the Katonah Methodist Church about 1891.3
Mary Harriette Cargon married Harry Zalmon Mayne, son of James C. Mayne and Josephine Burnett, on 31 May 1898 at Old Katonah, Westchester County, New York.4,5 The wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents on Cherry Street.5

It was Martha DeVoe's understanding that Harry and Mary had no children of their own by choice, because they were second cousins (they both had William and Rachel Burnett as great-grandparents.)9

On 6 July 1934, Mary Mayne was injured when a passenger bus overturned twelve miles west of Bryce Canyon. (The compiler recalls being told it was a Tauck tour.13) She had a fractured leg, and was taken with several other passengers to a hospital at Cedar City, Utah.14

DeVoe described his Aunt Mary as "a very stately person."16 On 15 Sep 1966, Mary Mayne and Marion DeVoe were visited at their Katonah home by Martha, Howard, and Patricia DeVoe. John and Catherine DeVoe were also there. Mary was very ill, probably on her death bed. Howard remembers carrying John into Mary's upstairs bedroom, and how delighted she was to touch a four-month old baby.17
Mary Harriette Cargon died on 27 September 1966 at 43 Edgemont Road, Katonah, Westchester County, New York, at age 89.18,3 The funeral was on 29 September 1966 at 43 Edgemont Road, Katonah, Westchester County, New York, at 2 pm.18 She was buried on 29 September 1966 in lot 1350 (Walpole plot), Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, Westchester County, New York.19,20,21
