The boom consists of a truss section and an I-beam section so that both concepts could be taught using the crane. The boom is mounted to the body through a thick shaft on which is mounted a wormgear. This worm gear is mated to a worm which is mounted on the body assembly. The truss assembly was constructed first, along with the mounting for the pulley. The truss consists of 26 individual pieces not including the bolts ! The manufacturing of the I beam portion came next. A solid aluminum block was milled to the desired dimensions. Next the axel for the worm gear was machined. The threading was done in the physics machine shop. As a safety precaution, a shaft was inserted through the boom and the worm gear. The worm gear was purchased from Boston Gears, and the nuts and lock washers were purchased from Hechingers.
