THE TERRAPIN

by Julice C.

The terrapin belongs to a class called reptiles. They are air/breathers and walk very, very slowly on land. Of all turtles, the terrapin is the most valuable food. The female diamondback terrapin lays eight to twenty eggs a year. The terrapins live around the Atlantic Sea coast and in the marshy areas of Chesapeake Bay.

A long time ago, the officials at University of Maryland chose this small reptile for their school mascot.
