In general, limit the number of dummy THEREs in a document.
For ENGL393, practice your revising skills by revising out all dummy THEREs.
A few examples:
-See if a word or phrase after "There is" or "There are" can become the subject of the sentence.
"There are many important details hidden in the fine print."
>>> "Many important details are hidden in the fine print."
-Dummy There can often be removed simply by deleting there is or there are and a nearby, related that.
"There is one point that must be
considered before turning to the results." >>> "One point must be
considered before turning to the results."
-Consider how a sentence with dummy There can be combined with
the sentence before or after it
as a way to remove There.
"There
are three stages in the process. The first is the most critical."
>>>
"Of the three stages in the process, the first is the most critical."
