Hira Bates was born in July 1796 in Hanover, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Captain Clement Bates and Rebecca Stetson.2

Hira Bates married Lucy Dwelley Josselyn, daughter of Charles Josselyn and Lucy Dwelley, on 24 February 1825 at Scituate, Massachusetts.3,4,1 Hira Bates and Lucy Dwelley Josselyn lived on Broadway, Hanover, Massachusetts, in a house built by Hira about 1823.5

Hira Bates died on 1 August 1889 in Hanover, Massachusetts, at age 93.6
