A Short List
I have the list I keep by my desk at work here in hand. This is a list
of songs I hear off the radio and think enough of to pause and write
their names down over the course of a year. The over all intention of the list is new stuff. But
being a mere consumer of tunage while I shake out the marc tags of a
days copy cataloging I allow these listed here to be at the least new to
me. So (in no discernible order this year):
- The Ex | AllMusic
Song: Maybe I was the Pilot.
Album: Catch My Shoe.
Year: 2010.
Note: They are Belgian I believe and have been around for quite a while
- Kurt Vile - Wikipedia
Song: Freeway.
Album: Constant Hitmaker.
Year: 2008. See also In My Time ep 2010 the title song Notes: reminds me at times (and only at times) of Bobb Trimble. This is not a bad thing by any means.
- Oakley Hall (band) - Wikipedia
Song: Landlord.
Album: Second Guessing.
Year: 2006.
Notes: Terrific song, enough said.
- Birds of Maya on Myspace
Song: Reglation.
Purling Hiss on Myspace
Song: Run from the City.
Mentioned these bands on last years list, and continued to hear from them
throughout the year. Purling Hiss is largely Michael Polizze from Birds
of Maya. Both entities are active and out of Philidelphia. Purling Hiss
did a great live set on WFMU toward the end of the year.
- HAPPY ELF on Myspace
Song: Another Day.
Notes: Not trance exactly, but it put me in one.
- Bon Iver - Wikipedia
Song: Re:Stacks.
Album: For Emma Forever Ago.
Year: 2007. Notes:
Band Is Justin Vernon, Bon (H)Iver means "Good Winter".
- Electric Six - Wikipedia
Song: I Belong In a Factory.
Album: Kill.
Year: 2009.
Notes: Most fun you can have on a working man's salary
- Afrirampo - Wikipedia
Song: Touzai nan boku. Notes: These girls are a portion of Japanese culture less well known, sadly they called it quits this year.
- Mumford & Sons - Wikipedia
Song: Little Lion Man, the Cave.
Album: Sigh No More.
Year: 2009.
Notes: A guilty pleasure perhaps, but I cannot resist the song Little Lion Man, nor the video to the Cave.
- The E-Types | AllMusic: 60's California Psych Garage
Song: Put the Clock Back on the Wall.
Album: Introducing
Year: 1967?
Notes: I know I've heard this before, but never stopped to consider it till now. Crafted pop-psyche from mid 60's California.
- Barbara Manning | AllMusic
Barbara Manning - Wikipedia
Song: Stammtisch.
Album:1212
.Year: 1997.
Notes: Barbara Manning was someone I recall from the band the 28th Day,
One of those indie figures you lose track of when you're no longer a college
radio dj. This is a lovely song, I have no idea what a Stammtisch is,
but the word was dogging my footsteps all year.
- YouTube - LCD Soundsystem - "Drunk Girls" DFA Records
Song: Drunk Girls.
Album: This is Happening.
Year: 2010.
Notes: Yeah. I'm just going to link the video and call it a night. This
is why they banned FourLoko, and what happens to people who think Panda
Bears are cute.
