John DeVoe was born on 24 October 1770 according to the DeVoe family bible.1 Mackenzie also gives 1770.2 He was the son of Abraham De Voe and Mary Davis. (The Thos. De Voe book states he was born in 1780, but this must be an error.)3 According to the church records John DeVoe was baptized on 1 September 1770 at the Old Dutch Church, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York, but perhaps it was later, before the next group of baptisms in April 1771.4
John DeVoe married Elizabeth Landrine, daughter of William F. Landrine and Mary Devaue, on 8 January 1807.1,5
John DeVoe appeared on the census of 1810 at Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, where his household is shown as having 2 males under 10 (presumably Abraham, b. 1807, and Isaac, b. 1809), 1 male age 26 thru 44 (presumably himself), 1 female age 16 thru 25 (presumably Elizabeth Landrine Devoe), and 1 slave.6
John DeVoe appeared on the census of 1820 at Mount Pleasant Township, Westchester County, New York, in which there is recorded one free white male of forty five and upwards. This presumably referred to John, and the age range is in agreement with his having been born in 1770 rather than 1780.7 He was engaged in agriculture according to the 1820 census.7
John DeVoe died on 19 September 1827 at Mount Pleasant, New York, at age 56.1,8,9,10 He was buried in the Old Dutch Burying Ground, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York.8,10,11
