Ellen Hair was born in 1834 in Reifferpark, the parish of Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of William Hair and Helen Dodds.1
Ellen Hair was also known as "Helen." Her maiden name was also spelled "Hare."
According to her granddaughter Ella Hannah Josselyn and the death certificate of her son Samuel J. Hannah, Ellen Hare was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, but this seems to be an error.2,3
Ellen Hair appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Millisle Cottage House, the parish of Sorbie, Wigtownshire, Scotland, in the household of her husband.4
Ellen Hair resided in 1855 in Reifferpark, the parish of Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1 Her "usual" residence was Liverpool, England.1 She was a domestic servant.1
Ellen Hair married Samuel P. Hannah, son of William Hannah and Elizabeth Morrison, on 6 December 1855 at Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1
Ellen Hair and Samuel P. Hannah immigrated to America in 1856. The names Sam'l Hanna, age 22, and wife Ellen, age 21, appear on the passenger list of the sailing vessel William Stetson dated 15 May 1856.5 The William Stetson sailed from Liverpool on 5 April and arrived in New York about 12 May after a perilous trip of 37 days.6,7
Ellen Hair appeared on the census of 9 August 1860 at Cortlandt Township, Westchester County, New York, in the household of her husband.8
Ellen Hair appeared on the census of 16 July 1870 at New Windsor, Orange County, New York, in the household of her husband.9
Ellen Hair appeared on the census of 6 June 1880 at 1620 Oak Street, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, in the household of her husband; her name was recorded as Hellen and she was shown as keeping house.10
Ellen Hair was apparently alive in 1900. A two-volume set of "The Little Minister" by J. M. Barrie, inscribed Merry Xmas to Ella from Grandma "1900" and belonging to Ella M. Hannah, was in Martha (Josselyn) DeVoe's possession when she died. The handwriting of the inscription, however, closely resembles that of Ellen's daughter-in-law Mary Christena Mayer.
