Samuel P. Hannah was born on 29 June 1833 in Garrarie, the parish of Glasserton, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1 He was the son of William Hannah and Elizabeth Morrison.1

According to his granddaughter Ella Hannah Josselyn and the death certificate of his son Samuel J. Hannah, Samuel P. Hannah was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.2,3 The compiler (H. DeVoe) was unable to find a birth record for a Samuel Hannah in Edinburgh in 1832 or 1833.

The name Samuel Hannay, age 7, appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Garrarie, the parish of Glasserton, Wigtownshire, Scotland.4

Samuel P. Hannah appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Broughton Mains, the parish of Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.5 The census shows him as an agricultural laborer on the 500-acre farm of William Hardie in Broughton Mains, age 17, born in Glasserton.

Samuel P. Hannah resided in 1855 in Broughton Mains, the parish of Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1 He was a ploughman.1

Samuel P. Hannah married Ellen Hair, daughter of William Hair and Helen Dodds, on 6 December 1855 at Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland.1

Samuel P. Hannah and Ellen Hair immigrated to America in 1856. The names Sam'l Hanna, age 22, and wife Ellen, age 21, appear on the passenger list of the sailing vessel William Stetson dated 15 May 1856.6 The William Stetson sailed from Liverpool on 5 April and arrived in New York about 12 May after a perilous trip of 37 days.7,8

Samuel P. Hannah appeared on the census of 9 August 1860 at Cortlandt Township, Westchester County, New York, post office Sing Sing.9 He was a farm laborer according to the August 1860 census.9

Samuel P. Hannah was naturalized on 7 September 1864 at New York, New York.10 He resided in 1866 on Croton Avenue, Sing Sing (now Ossining), Westchester County, New York.11 He was a gardener in 1866.11

Samuel P. Hannah appeared on the census of 16 July 1870 at New Windsor, Orange County, New York.12

Samuel P. Hannah appeared on the census of 6 June 1880 at 1620 Oak Street, Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.13 He was a lawyer according to the June 1880 census.13

A Samuel P. Hannah was listed as a night baggageman at the West Shore Railroad Station in Newburgh, New York, in city directories of 1890, 1891, and 1892.14,15,16 A Samuel J. Hannah was also listed as a railroad employee in these directories, so perhaps father and son had moved together from Indiana to New York in or before 1890.
