Ancestors of Martha Josselyn (1909 - 2007)
Ralph Jocelyn was born about 1160.1

Note: the surname Jocelyn is also found spelled as Jocelin.

Despite the claim of at least one Josselyn family historian,2 there is no evidence that Ralph Jocelyn was a descendant of Sir Gilbert Jocelyn, who came to England with William the Conqueror, or that his ancestors were connected with the Chateau de Josselin, Josselin, Brittany, France.3,4

According to research published by Elizabeth French in 19175, Ralph Jocelyn was the son of Henry Jocelyn and Jane Chastelin. However, more recent research shows this is unlikely. No corroborative evidence in contemporary documents has been found.1 Ralph Jocelyn probably took his surname from the given name of his father, whoever that might have been.6,1

Ralph Jocelyn married first Beatrice de Beseville about 1200.7,8

Ralph Jocelyn and Beatrice de Beseville were tenants of lands in Easton and Appletree in Northamptonshire by 1201.9

Ralph Jocelyn married second Maude Hyde, daughter of Sir John Hide and Elizabeth Sudley, after 1206.10 The marriage is shown in the Raven pedigree of 1612.10,11 Ralph acquired Hida (later Hyde Hall) in Hertfordshire, probably as part of a settlement related to his marriage to Maud Hyde.10 He also acquired Selewes (later Shellow Bowells) in Essex.12 The Jocelyn family owned Hyde Hall for the next 750 years.13

Ralph Jocelyn died in 1212.14
