Hello! My name is George Xie. I am a current undergraduate at the University of Maryland (UMD), majoring in Computer Science.

In my free time, I play the violin, read, watch Youtube, and do game-related work (advising, moderating Discord server of, testing, and maintaining Wiki pages).

My current goal is to get a job somewhere in the field of AI, particularly one in AI Safety. I believe AI is a powerful yet risky tool; it is a form of automation that is able to outperform humans on many tasks -- it could be cheaper, faster, more skilled, maybe some combination of these -- which justified its integration into many sectors of our society. However, it is a technology we can't fully control. We can't truly "understand" modern AI because of their black-box architecture, so we can't ensure it is properly aligned, and this has dangerous implications. I seek to contribute in this way: ensure the systems we use are not just powerful, but safe.
