About Lea Chartock

Lea Chartock is the Acting Director of the Professional Writing Program. She holds an M.A. in English with a concentration in Rhetoric and Composition from California State University Dominguez Hills. After receiving her M.A., she joined the Cal State Dominguez faculty as an instructor, specializing in developmental writing classes and working with ESL students. She also taught at West Los Angeles College and at Loyola Marymount University, where she incorporated a literature-based approach to teaching rhetoric and critical analysis.

Ms. Chartock joined the English Department at the University of Maryland in the fall of 1993. She has taught Freshman Composition, Intermediate Composition, Advanced Composition, Technical Writing, Business Writing, Writing in the Health Professions, and Editing and Document Design. She has also taught Technical Communication at the undergraduate and graduate level at Johns Hopkins University and does writing training for business through the PWP's Professional Writing Group.

Ms. Chartock has more than 20 years professional experience as a writer/editor. Her projects have included everything from biography and environmental impact reports to Web site content, association newsletters, manuals and feature articles. She has published fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and has worked as a scriptwriter for television and film.
