Hi! My name is Kitty Shi, an undergraduate student in the class of 2027. I am a student double majoring in Computer Science on the Data Science track and the Biological Science on the Cell Biology and Molecular Biology track at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Currently, I plan to take at least one biological science related course every semester as I want to become a Bioinformatic Computer Scientist, developing
programs used to research genetics and genomes to help develop medicine. I'm interested in software development, machine learning, and interdisciplinary applications of computer science.
Through the Science and Global Change program I want to be able to explore the field of environmental science as its always been of interest of mine.
Gaining knowledge in environmental science allows me to understand not only the climate crisises that are to come, prevention methods, and sustainability actions,
it also allows me to apply the information to bioinformatics, accounting for the external factors that impact genetics.
Genetic and environmental effects on human DNA is a complex field that requires knowledge from all sectors of science, including the environmental science.
I also have a love of nature, spending hours outside on aimless walks, and hiking in the moutains. To explore the complexities of human interactions with the natural world is fascinating to me.
I'm excited for the potential outdoors trips that SGC would take us on. Hopefully I will be able to learn about identifiers of plants (native, invasive, and poisonous) and different wildlife.
Trips to the natural science museums are also a high antipicated part of the course for me. I love exploring the exhibits in the museums, learning new pieces of information and history.
