the regularly scheduled exam and your providing proper documentation for absences. Mid-term is
scheduled on October 30. Please check the class schedule on the web for changes

These are quite frankly designed to make certain you are doing your preparation for class. These
will be increasingly sophisticated as the semester goes along. But they will not be that difficult for
those who are prepared for class. There will be six of these at various unannounced times. Ten
percent of grade.

Your assignment for the paper is to take one of the speeches from the Carson, et al. book that we
are not discussing in class and analyze it as a response to the moment in which it was given.
Your analysis should reveal your ability to understand how discourse relates to its context in a
social movement. I will expect to see evidence of your reading in the history of the movement, of
the perspective of the Campbell text, and of our class discussion. I will expect to see references
to the readings in your paper. The paper should be 1500 to 2500 words (six to ten pages of 12
point type), and should contain proper documentation of ideas including a bibliography of works
consulted. Due December 2. 30 percent of grade. Papers will be evaluated based on: (1) the
degree to which the paper captures the speech as a response to the moment, (2) the quality of the
writing, and (3) the following of proper form. MLA or APA form will be accepted. An "A"
paper will be superior on all three criteria.

Incompletes
Papers are due at the beginning of the class period on the day indicated. Any paper handed in
after the beginning of the class period is considered late. Late Papers will be assessed a penalty of
one half grade. If your schedule makes it impossible for you to hand a paper in on time, see me
before the due date. There is a "Request for Late Paper" form that I will ask you to complete and
we will negotiate a new due date. This will not be permitted after the paper is late. As in all
University courses, an "Incomplete Contract" will need to be negotiated if all work is not
completed by the end of the semester, or a grade of "F" will be assigned to missing work.
