This course will be an exploration of Obama's unique qualities and style as a public speaker. We will examine a series of his most important speeches including his 2004 Democratic National Convention Speech, his Philadelphia Speech on Civil Rights during the 2008 campaign, his Election night speech in Chicago, his Inaugural Address, and his commencement speech at the University of Michigan on civility in government. We will also cover various perspectives from which we can illuminate the character of public speeches by leaders. Late in the semester we will exam speeches from his presidency, and we will end the semester with an assessment: What advice would we give Obama on his speaking through the rest of his presidency?
