James Playfair was born on 5 August 1755.1 He was the son of James Playfair and Margaret Young.
James Playfair was an architect. According to Philip Miller, an architect who organized an exhibition of his life and work at Cairness House, Aberdeenshire, in 1999: James Playfair the subject of this exhibition is arguably Scotland's most neglected architect. In his own time his designs were so revolutionary as to have very limited appeal in a society used to the elegant frippery of Robert Adam. Of his contemporaries John Soane appreciated his talents and took pains to acquire his drawings.1
James Playfair married Rachel Barclay.2
James Playfair died on 23 February 1794 at age 38.1
