John Playfair

John Playfair was born in 1748 in Benvie parish, Perthshire, Scotland. He was the son of James Playfair and Margaret Young. John Playfair was baptized on 10 March 1748.
John graduated in 1765 from the University of St. Andrews and became a distinguished Professor of Mathematics, and later of Natural Philosophy, at Edinburgh University. He is best known for contributions to the study of geology. His nephew William Henry Playfair, the famous architect, designed a memorial to him which stands on Calton Hill in Edinburgh.
John Playfair died in 1819. He was buried in Old Calton Cemetery, Edinburgh, Scotland.
