John Troup was born about 1772 (his entry in the Bolton burial records says "Died Feb. 8th 1854 aged 81 1/2 yrs") at Banchory Devenick, Kincardineshire, Scotland.1,2

Margaret Elizabeth Troupe looked for John Troup's parents, with inconclusive results. The Scottish Old Parish Registers showed two John Troups baptized in 1772: John, son of Charles Troup, 1 November at Aboyne, Aberdeenshire; and John, son of John Troup, 17 June 1772 at Peterculter, Aberdeenshire. Neither agrees with John's birth place, Banchory Devenick in Kincardineshire, given in the 1851 census. Margaret wrote that traditionally in Scottish families, the firstborn son was named after the father's father and the second son after the father; John called his firstborn Alexander so this could be the name of his father. She found an Alexander Troup raising his family at Brae of Pitfoddels in the Aberdeen area, but could not find a John. She had been told that Troup is a very common surname in Aberdeenshire, and the family is a sept of the Gordon clan.

John Troup married Agnus Archbold, daughter of Robert Archbald and Margaret Hercus, on 17 April 1804 at Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland. John Troup and Agnus Archbold lived in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.

John Troup married Beatrix Bruce, daughter of Charles Bruce and Rachael Smith, on 16 May 1819 at Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.3 John Troup was a labourer in January 1836 in Lennoxlove, Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland.4

John Troup appeared on the census of 1841 at Park End, Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland.5 Park End is one or two cottages outside the Lennoxlove wall, one mile south of Haddington on the Bolton road; it was still there in 2001, much renovated.

John Troup appeared on the census of 1851 at Park End, Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland.1 He was was described as an agricultural labourer in the 1841 and 1851 censuses and the Bolton burial records.2,5,1

John Troup died on 8 February 1854 in Parkend, Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland.2 He was buried in the churchyard, Bolton, East Lothian, Scotland.2 In Bolton churchyard are the graves of Robert Burn's parents and sisters (Margaret Troupe.)

This information about John Troup is from the histories of the Troup and Robertson families compiled in 2001 and 2003 by Margaret Elizabeth Troupe of Stockton-on-Tees, England, unless otherwise noted.
