TEACHING AND ADVISING RESPONSIBILITIES

LBSC 640 School Library Media Specialists as Information Professionals

Core course for students in the school library media specialization, which is collaboratively taught with Dr. Delia Neuman. Course evaluations from the Fall 2003 semester reflected a score of 4.8/5.0 on the measure of teaching effectiveness and 5.0/5.0 on the measure of the value of the course to an understanding of the field.

LBSC 741 School Library Media Program Administration

Course revised Spring 2002 to increase requirements, which include preparation of a portfolio that demonstrates competencies in all aspects of program management. Course evaluations from the Spring 2003 semester reflected a score of 4.8/5.0 on the measure of teaching effectiveness and 4.8/5.0 on the measure of the value of the course to an understanding of the field.

LBSC744 Field Study in School Library Media Programs

Assumed all responsibility for the “capstone” course for students in the school library media specialization in 2001. Completely revised and significantly increased course requirements. Course evaluations from the Fall 2003 semester reflected a score of 5.0/5.0 on the measure of teaching effectiveness and 4.9/5.0 on the measure of value of the course to an understanding of the field.

LBSC709 Independent Study

Summer 2002 semester – Supervised two school library media students.
Spring 2003 semester – Supervised one school library media student.
Spring 2004 semester – Supervise three students in the public library area.

Advise 30-40 MLS students each semester who are planning careers as school library media specialists. In addition, during the 2003-2004 academic year, I assumed responsibility for advising an additional 20 students who are planning careers as public librarians, children’s librarians, or children’s information specialists.

SERVICE TO THE PROFESSION

American Library Association.

Committee on Accreditation. Member of the 12-person Review Board that accredits schools and colleges of library and information science in the United States and Canada. 2003 – 2006.

Councilor-at-Large. Elected member of the policy-making body of the oldest and largest library association in the world. 2003 – 2006.

Information Commons Subcommittee. Appointed member of the committee charged with making recommendations regarding the principle of “fair use” in a digital environment. 2002 – 2005.

World Book Award Jury. Appointed member of the jury responsible for evaluating and recommending the recipient of the largest grant to an ALA unit for innovative program development. 2002 – 2004.

American Association of School Librarians

Vision Expansion Special Committee. Blue-ribbon panel charged with making recommendations for the revision of national guidelines for the school library media profession. 2002 – 2005.

Supervisors Section Chair. Elected leader of the largest section of the organization that represents individuals in supervisory positions in school districts throughout the county.

SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE

Personnel Committee. Chair the committee charged with redefining and strengthening the research environment for the College. Presented recommendations for clarifying research expectations and reporting procedures to Collegium for approval and developed implication plan. 2003-2004

Leadership Area Working Group. Faculty member representing the interests youth services librarians in the creation of an area of emphasis for the College. Although the work has just begun, I expect to have the opportunity to develop a leadership institute for supervisors of library and information services in large urban school districts; to contribute to the creation of a course in leadership for master’s level students; and to work with leaders in the public library field in Maryland to create training opportunities in the leadership area for practitioners.

Admissions Committee. Participated in establishing admission requirements for the new Master’s of Information Management (MIM) degree and aligning requirements for the MLS and MIM. Review and approve applicants to the program. 2002-2004.

Curriculum Committee. School library media program representative to the special committee charged with redefining the management course requirements for the College. 2003. Contributed to the development of the course requirements for the MIM degree. 2002-2003.

Doctoral Committee. Participated in the revision of the requirements for the Ph.D. Reviewed and approved applicants to the program. 2000-2002.

School Library Media Program Curriculum Review. Represented the interests and concerns of both practitioners and research faculty in the revision, review, and submission of the curriculum for school library media specialists for approval by the CLIS Collegium and the Maryland State Education Department. Curriculum was approved by the State as submitted.
