Design Optimization of Cantilever Beam Using Pro/MECHANICA

A cantilever beam created in Pro/ENGINEER is illustrated in figure 1. The material used here is AL2014_IPS. It is the same as that in the example used for the training session. Therefore, you can retrieve the material information from the material library of Pro/MECHANICA. The original dimension of the beam is 150" x 10" x 4". The load acting on the free end is a uniformly distributed load. Its magnitude is P= 50 lb/inch, acting on the central part of the end edge and covering a length of 2". Note that the loading condition remains unchanged during the process of varying the beam thickness. This assignment requires

  1. Determine the maximum deflection of the beam.
  2. Reduce the deflection of the beam to 80% of the maximum deflection of the beam by increasing the thickness of the beam, and/or increasing the height of the beam, and/or reducing the overhanging length of the beam. The attached table provides the upper and lower limits that can be used.
  3. Each student in the team should present two solutions.
  4. Make a table listing all solutions and select the best solution (define the term "best" first).

We suggest that you use a two-dimensional shell model.
