ENME 414 Computer Aided Design

Homework Assignment 7

Integration of CAD and Engineering Analysis

Due Monday, November 15, 1999

This is team homework assignment because it involves a significant amount of work, which requires the effort to be made by the entire team.

Question 1  Use Pro/MECHANICA to complete the following two tasks:

Task 1

Assume that your team is asked to evaluate the performance of a beam structure in terms of the deflections at Point A and Point B.  The beam structure is used to support a steel block.  Note that the material of the beam structure is aluminum.

Task 2

Your team is asked to modify the beam structure to achieve reduction of the defection at both Point A and Point B.  The requirement is at least 50% reduction.  You do not have freedom to change the length, as it had to stay with the current 100 inches.  However, you have the freedom to adjust the thickness and the height of the beam structure.  There could be many, many solutions to this redesign.  Provide the reasons why your team has come up with the hand-in solution.

Task 3

Verify the solutions the team has obtained with the corresponding analytical solutions based on the formulas available in the text:  Mechanics of Material.

Question 2  Use Pro/MECHANICA to complete the following two tasks:

Assume that the beam structure is subjected to an additional load.  It is a cylinder made of steel.  In order to accommodate the load.  A hole is made.  Your team is asked to evaluate the performance of the beam structure in terms of the deflections at Point A and Point B.

The diameter of the cylinder:  10 inches

The length of the cylinder:          40 inches

Position:  x=20 inches and y=10 inches
