Course Objective: The main objectives are to provide students with a conceptual understanding of CAD/CAE principles, and the implementation of these principles. The generic aspect of CAD/CAE software systems will be discussed. A large portion of the students' time will be spent independently in the CAD labs learning the details of design and analysis related to the product realization process. Working in terms, the students are responsible for completing a semester-long project to demonstrate the broadest and depth of their CAD knowledge and skills of using CAD systems.
Topics Covered:
Concept of computer aided design
Information technology and computer aided design systems
3D solid modeling and feature-based design
Product design and engineering graphics
Engineering documentation
Geometrical dimensioning and tolerances
Design for manufacturing
Design for assembly
Economic evaluation of engineering design
Fundamentals of Pro/ENGINEER
Part modeling
Assembly and standardized parts
Animation and data management systems
A combined engineering design and finite element analysis
Integration of CAD/CAM
Class/Laboratory Schedule:
Three two-hours lab session (the 3rd, 8th, and 10th week). There are two hours for each lab session.
Course Contributions:
The students are provided with the ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice, and the ability to function in multi-disciplinary teams, and the ability to design a system, component, or process to meet the desired needs.
Relationship of course to program objectives:
This course provides senior undergraduate students with the basic and
specialized engineering training in modern CAD systems. Through lecturing
in the classroom and hands-on learning experience in the design and
manufacturing laboratory, the students are expected to gain the knowledge
and skills in the engineering design that are necessary for seeking
fruitful emplyment opportunity. This course also serves an important role
in supporting other senior design courses where using CAD systems to
comlete course projects is required.
