ENME 414 Computer Aided Design
Homework Assignment 9 (Team Effort)
Due 8:00 am, November 16, 1998
Integration of CAD and CAM

In the classroom the students have learned the fundamentals of numerically controlled machining, or NC machining. The students have also learned how to generate NC programming to machine a designed part under Pro/MANUFACTURE. In the laboratory the students have learned how to operate a CNC machine tool.

In this homework assignment, each team is given a piece of raw material. The material is Acrylic, a type of plastic. The size is 6" x 4" x 1/4". The student team is asked to design a part to be machined on the CNC machining center in the manufacturing building. A set of constraints is give below:

  1. The student team has to complete the entire machining operation within 50 minutes. The team needs to set up the machine tool, to place the workpiece on the machine table, to establish the local coordinate system, to perform tool offset operations, and to make a dry run for checking the machining operation.
  2. The maximum time that is allowed to complete the machining operation is limited to 5 minutes.
  3. We only have end mills. The available sizes of end mills are 1/4", 1/8", and 1/16". The maximum number of tools can be used is limited to 2 end mills.

It is required that two NC programs should be prepared and submitted. The students manually prepare the NC program. The other NC program is generated through Pro/MANUFACTURE. The team should prepare the lab report.
