Conclusion
The broad intention of this project
was to study and clearly define the need of elderly people for maintaining
mobility. Team 7 narrowed this comprehensive definition to solely include
the mobility of a specific dwarfed sized woman. While addressing the needs
of our customer, the safety, versatility, cost, and durability of the wheelchair
were kept in mind. Ultimately, by accepting this project it became
the responsibility of Team 7 to improve the comfort and mobility of the
client.
At the request of the customer, the donated wheelchair
was modified in the following ways:
-
the wheelchair was made collapsible for easier storage and
travel
-
the width of the seat was reduced by two inches
-
the depth of the seat was reduced by five inches
-
the armrests were lowered by three inches
-
the damaged wheelchair components were replaced
In addition to
these goals, the team wanted to enable the wheelchair to be secure when
it is closed and secure the frame while in the open position to make the
wheelchair fully operational. Several other modifications to the
chair were made to ensure the satisfaction of the customer including the
ordering of new wheels, a modified custom made seat, armrests, and a backrest.
Finally, the wheel chair will be electroplated to keep it free from rust
and give it a shiny new finish.
Team 7 has
accomplished the goals set forth at the onset of the semester. These
goals were met through a series of modifications to the frame of the chair.
These modifications were implemented through the successful teaming of
the group members, the J.M Patterson Machine Shop personnel and the personnel
at Kares Medical Inc. This project offered the opportunity to learn Pro/ENGINEER
and gain valuable experience both working with team members and with those
in the commercial setting. This project has emphasized the importance
of a closely maintained time schedule as well as long term dedication to
completing a project. The successful completion of this project marks
the end of several valuable lessons learned.
