Mission of the Project

To create an accurate three dimensional model of the human mandible using Pro/Enginnering CAD software and perform finite element analysis.

Outline of Project

The project is organized into three stages of development.

STAGE 1-Preliminary Analysis
The first stage consists of several preliminiary tests. The first test compares the results of a solid part and an assembly finite elemnt analysis. The second test involves the finite element analysis of an earlier jaw model created in Pro/E.

STAGE 2-Three Dimensional Model Construction
In the second stage, the methodology of creating an accurate three dimensional jaw model is developed. A plastic jaw model is encased in an epoxy cube. The cube is then taken to a CNC machine where 2mm thick layers are milled off one at a time. After each milling, a digital camera, attached to the CNC machine head, is used to scan over the face to collect data points of the cross section. The data will then be imported into Pro/E to created the final solid model.

STAGE 3-Final Finite Element Analysis
The final stage consists of performing the finite element analysis of the model created in Stage 2.
