ENME 414 Computer Aided Design
HW 8: Finite Element Analysis using Pro/MECHANICA
Due Wednesday, November 19, 1997
The instructor is providing you with instructions of using Pro/MECHANICA. Please read these
instructions and use Pro/MECHANICA to perform finite element analysis. You should feel
comfortable to use Pro/MECHANICA because you have gained the fundamentals of engineering
analyses using the Pro/ENGINEER design system. Team work is encouraged for discussing how to
use Pro/MECHANICA. However, completion of Homework 8 should be through your individual
effort.
In homework assignment 7, you used a combination of Pro/ENGINEER and ANSYS to do a thin
wall plate analysis. In homework assignment 8, you are asked to do the same thin wall plate
analysis, but using Pro/MECHANICA. You are asked to compare the two sets of results obtained
from using the two different methods.
- Analyze the thin wall plate problem described in homework 7 using
Pro/MECHANICA.
Your work should be as detailed as possible. The minimum requirement includes the stress
distribution along the longitudinal direction and the deflection in the vertical direction.

- Compare the results you get in homework 7 and homework 8.
- Since the geometry and the load case both are symmetrical, you should
think about a set of
constraints on the central plane to simplify the solution procedure. This is critical when
you use FEA. A common approach would be to analyze a half of the whole structure.
- You should use the GLUE system to print your results. It is important
that you feel
comfortable with printers available to you. You may use the ADML printer. For color
prints, you take care of them by yourself.
