ENME 414 Computer Aided Design
Homework Assignment 3 - Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Due Wednesday, February 26, 1997
Statement: Engineering drawings provide the manufacturing department with the information
necessary for producing the designed parts. Therefore, it is important that the dimensions be clear
and complete. When dimensioning the part under design, think of the manufacturing process to
produce it. Tolerances must also be placed on the dimensions of a designed part. It is very
difficult, if not impossible, to manufacture a part exactly to given dimensions. A small tolerance
results in greater ease of interchangeability of parts, but it also adds additional costs to the
product realization process. In this homework assignment, you are asked to use window-based
CAD tools. These CAD systems are most commonly used because of affordability. These CAD
systems are mainly wire frame systems, run on the PC platform. It is for this reason we begin our
exploration of CAD with a PC based wire frame system; CADKEY. It will be necessary to be
familiar with wire frame systems in the job market.
Assignments:
Create the front and sectional views of the two parts below using CADKEY.
1. Insert dimensions and tolerances as needed based on your judgment.
2. Use cross-sections where applicable.
3. Create the rendered isometric image.
4. Make use of the software's features to limit the amount of work you need to perform.
