Helen Barnes

Helen Barnes was born in Chattanooga Tennessee in 1942. She is the oldest of two children. After high school she studied nursing in Charlotte North Carolina and in 1970 Helen graduated with a bachelors degree. She was a faculty member at Watts Hospital School of Nursing in North Carolina. Barnes went to England for a year with her husband and served as a staff nurse. Upon returning to the US, they settled in Maryland where Barnes was hired with the Department of Aging as a field nurse specializing in elder abuse and mental health issues for PG County. Barnes retired from this job after 20 years. Helen has two grown children and she resides with her husband in College Park Maryland.

Quilting in Tennessee

When Helen was a little girl she remembers her Mom making quilts from preparing the cotton batting to working with other women to finish the quilting process. Helen "quilts" a bit of fantasy into her story including where a particular piece of fabric came from and how it was valued in future generation. High Africa

This is the story of a brother and a sister that long to visit Africa and their friend. They become discouraged when they find out how much money it will cost them.

About

These stories began after visiting a neighbor, Helen Barnes. During the visit she began talking about story telling and how she could make a story out of most anything. She commenced to prove her point by starting a story about the two of us. The next visit I brought my camera and she began a tale that was inspired by one of her nurses and her life.

Although we had lived a few houses away from each other for over 30 years, this was the first time we had a chance to really get to know each other.
