How We Did It

The students read a variety of American tall tales, including those by Adrien Stoutenburg and Steven Kellogg. Students:

After reading, students were given a choice of either retelling a tall tale and making an award for the main character, or, writing an original tall tale. Those writing their own tall tales began by making a story map as a prewriting tool. After writing a first draft, peer conferencing, and proofreading, they wrote a final copy. Finally, they made an illustration.
