Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Maryland
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
I'm a postdoctoral researcher at University of Maryland. I'm mentored by Sennur Ulukus in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. I recieved my PhD in mathematics from University of Illinois Chicago in 2024. I find myself working on problems at the intersection of graph theory, information theory, and learning algorithms. I'm currently working on projects involving LLM token dynamics, gossiping networks, and private information retrieval.
November 2024 Joint work with Arunabh Srivastava and Sennur Ulukus on Age of Gossip With Time-Varying Topologies is out!
September 2024 Joint work with Arunabh Srivastava and Sennur Ulukus on Age of Gossip with the Push-Pull Protocol is out!
September 2024 New paper joint with Marcus Michelen is out on the ArXiV: Age of gossip from connective properties via first passage percolation
July 2024 Started at UMD, and migrated this website.
June 2024 Defended my thesis!
April 2024 Two of my papers have been accepted to ISIT 2024, one on Age of Gossip and one on String Reconstruction. See you in Greece!
April 2024 I'll be particiapting in the IDEAL Exchange at Northwestern University this summer.
April 2024 I had a busy weekend on the east coast! I attended the Princeton FQC conference on quantitative finance, there are some really interesting problems in this area. I also caught the last half of the AMS sectional meeting at Howard University in Washington.
February 2024 I gave a talk on my recent preprint to Sennur Ulukus' group at UMD.
December 2024 I'm happy to announce I've been selected for the IDEAL Research Fellowship for this semester!
December 2023 My new preprint, Age of Gossip in Random and Bipartite Networks, is on the ArXiv. Sumbitted to ISIT 2024.
August 2023 My paper with Xing Gao and Lev Reyzin, A Unified Analysis of Dynamic Interactive Learning, has been accepted to ALLERTON. See you in Champaign!
March 2023 I'm giving a talk at UIC's combinatorics seminar on Discrete Fourier Analysis techniques.
February 2023 I'm happy to announce I will be working with R-DEX Systems this summer as a machine learning intern!
May 2022 I'm an instructor for UIC's Young Scholars Program this summer. I'm giving lectures and developing problem sets for high schoolers interested in math and cs.
$-\infty$ to Spring 2022 I gave a few talks around the UIC math department on my undergraduate thesis on reconstruction problems. I continued to work on this problem while wrapping up my masters.
My email is tmaran 'at' umd 'dot' edu. My office is AV Williams 2455.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing ping pong and bouldering. As the reigning Fall 2023 UIC MSCS Grad Student Ping Pong Champion, I was forced to defend my title in Spring 2023. I was bested by the great Sayok Chakravarty briefly after the first photo was taken; my 80's wrestling costume did not phase him.
The last two photos are from a climbing trip myself and a few other MSCS grad students took out to Joes Valley, Utah in the summer of 2023.
