The Story of the Rutgers 12-Inch Cyclotron: A student built and student maintained particle accelerator

An operational, 1 MeV, proton cyclotron has been incorporated into the Rutgers University's Modern (Senior) Physics Lab course. The 12-inch cyclotron project began as a personal pursuit for the speaker in 1995. The cyclotron was moved into the Physics Building in 2001 where its continuous evolution has since been carried out by new generations of students. The Rutgers cyclotron project introduces undergraduate students to modern experimental techniques generally not encountered until graduate level research; and most uniquely, the Rutgers 12-Inch Cyclotron exposes students to the esoteric field of accelerator physics.
