Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAMs) in tokamaks: How are they excited and do they play a role in improved confinement.

The Geodesic Acoustic mode is a plasma mode observed specifically in toroidally confined plasmas. Various techniques have detected these modes in the edge region of these plasmas. The primary process for the excitation of these modes has been studied and various characteristics of these modes are explained by a simple mode-coupling theory. Furthermore the implications of these modes in influencing the improved confined mode known at the H (high confinement) mode will be discussed.
