Event name: From Story to Superpower: Finding Your Place in the Climate Space with Matt Scott
Event time and place: 4/21/26 at 6pm, over Zoom
Attending the workshop by Matt Scott was one of the more stimulating climate activism experiences I've had this semester. He focused on the four presenters' paths to climate activism, and on how each of us could contribute to the climate space. The first thing he had us do was complete our climate Venn Diagrams. These were three skills, things we enjoy, or other marketables that we could use in our search for a place in climate activism.
My Venn Diagram had being in nature and communicating science, communicating complex concepts, and helping with carbon capture. These things come together in a mixture of climate education, and carbon capture research. I think the latter path is incredibly important because it can help us not just slow down our emissions, but actively reverse the negative changes made by earlier iterations of our civilization.
Matt Scott then introduced the four presenters, who were all activists who had found their way in the climate space through notably different means. For example, one speaker had been a literature student, another was a scientist, and another simply had passion for communicating public issues. The point of the panel was essentially that everyone has something to give in the climate space. Since climate change is a challenge that confronts our entire society, we must use every societal resource we have, which includes every type of person.
I found the talk really inspiring. I'd recommend that all young people inclined to help solve the problem of climate change attend this workshop, so as to better allocate their skills in the fight against climate change.
