Sanjana Gangishetty's Three Semester Review

My past three semesters at SGC taught me a lot about how we use foundations of scientific practice to explore causes, evidence, and implications of global change. It also taught me to use our scientific knowledge and communication when making important decisions for the future.

Over the last three semesters I have used the hypothetico-deductive method in many instances, one of which was during my experience as a Research Assistant during the Aspiring Scientists' Summer Internship Program. During this program I worked with a professor to investigate solvent effects on organic reactions. Applying the hypothetico-deductive method, we formulated hypotheses about how different solvents might influence reaction outcomes. My prior experience in the SGC program, with its focus on scientific practice, played a crucial role in preparing me for this research endeavor.

Through this class, I was able to meet a fellow SGC Scholar who was in the same computer science class as me which significantly improved my learning experience. We formed a study group and collaborated on projects, which made it easier to understand complex concepts. Having someone to discuss coding challenges and study for exams with not only enhanced my understanding of computer science but also made the learning process more enjoyable. This collaborative effort within the living-learning community of Scholars not only aided in my academics but also created a supportive environment where we could help each other succeed in our classes.

I believe I've actively contributed to SGC in various ways. In Colloquium discussions, I regularly shared insights from my previous knowledge in group discussions, adding diverse perspectives to our conversations on climate change and its implications. Additionally, during our trip to the Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens, I helped create walkways throughout the park and cleaned the nearby pond by weeding out excess plants. These examples show my enthusiasm in this course and the enjoyment I get from participating in outdoor activities.

Being part of the Scholars program exposed me to diverse perspectives and concepts that have challenged some of my existing beliefs and opinions. Engaging with other Scholars students and learning about the program, I was able to familiarize myself with different viewpoints on global challenges, especially in the topic of climate change, that helped me to rethink my own perspectives. While these challenges were not contradictions, they encouraged me to reflect on my opinions more closely. For example, talking about how to deal with climate change made me think about different ways to handle it, which led me to question if some methods really work while gaining a more detailed understanding. Apart from academics, being able to talk with other Scholars from different backgrounds let me be aware of broader societal issues. Overall, being in the Scholars program has been important in broadening my perspectives, encouraging critical reflection, and shaping a more adaptable mindset.

My Scholars experience has significantly influenced my academic and future professional course. As I approach my junior and senior years, the multifaceted perspective and critical thinking skills given by this program will undoubtedly shape my approach to advanced coursework, allowing me to tackle complex problems with a well-rounded perspective. Looking ahead to post-undergraduate education, the scientific practice and problem-solving emphasis of SGC will serve as a strong foundation for engaging with advanced academic content and contributing to research initiatives. In my future professional career, I see myself using the skills I learned in SGC when addressing real-world challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainability. The program has given me a sense of responsibility and awareness of the relationship and connectivity of global issues, motivating me to contribute to these challenges and help better the globe. The SGC program taught me to keep on learning and be flexible, which are really important things in a world that's always changing. It not only shaped my academic journey but also provided me with a solid foundation for dealing with larger issues in society and the environment in my future.
