It Came From The Science Fair (Adam Ruben) AND Burned with His Books: The Life and Times of Michael Servetus

The name of the presenter/organization/institution in this video about my first excursion is NCASVideo. The title of the presentation is It Came From The Science Fair (Adam Ruben). This is a part of a channel where similar videos about the sciences are uploaded. The URL to this video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9H-pPCPvAMg. This video is generally about the importance that lies in the idea of scientific literacy and just how important the role of science is in forming our understanding of the global status of the world around us. It specifically emphasizes the importance of scientific discovery and how challenges are faced with the conduction of experiments in this process of scientific discovery. Adam Ruben is a US federal employee and he delves into his thoughts on the judging of science shows and science fairs. He highlights the importance of experiments versus demonstrations and how those who embody both sides take place in his science fairs/shows. He highlights the fact that the demonstrations get more attention and advance forwards at younger ages, but as the age increases the use of experiments, research and theses becomes prevalent. In this transition, he emphasized the significance of a skeptical approach and critical approach to scientific research, emphasizing the challenges of lab work and mistakes. The name of the presenter/organization/institution in this video about my second excursion is also NCASVideo. The title of the presentation is Burned with His Books: The Life and Times of Michael Servetus. This is a part of a channel where similar videos about the sciences are uploaded. The URL to this video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZLCGDual6E. Micheal Servetus is a historical figure that is most famous for his discoveries in the anatomy of circulation of blood in the pulmonary systems. More famously, however, he is involved with the controversy he faced from the community due to his radical views in the medicinal world. In spite of the many advancements that he had made in his field, Servetus was found many times to be tried and prosecuted for being the one to challenge established religious and medical societal norms. His history, to us, serves to be a lesson on those who embark on journeys of criticism/skepticism when tackling societal beliefs. Despite the many hardships that he had undergone, he left us a guide on how one can responsibly pursue the truth and sound knowledge with a purpose. This video is essentially an overarching view of the life of Micheal Servetus and his significance that stands in history to this day. It is an acknowledgement of the ongoing debates that surround his name and how complex the nature of history is and how he stands as an interesting historical figure.

In the first excursion, the idea presented is one that I greatly agree with. Throughout the entire video, I saw two instances where this was prevalent. An experiment where the testing of antibacterial properties of honey and an experiment on the effect of music on plant growth were two instances where this was greatly highlighted. The importance of a well-executed study, clear hypothesis, controls for external factors, proper measurement and sample sizes were all shown in these experiments. The scientific community also barred the advancement of these experiments as well, which highlighted the criticism faced by the many young scientists who grow up in a scientific world. Yet they prevailed and the significance of these experiments surfaced and the community embraced the results. The process described by Adam Ruben has stood true and we can see how from a young age with the right nurturing in the way of sciences can foster the growth of scientists who embody the idea discussed above. Throughout the video there were many instances of failure of critical thinking when the science experiments themselves failed and were not accepted by the community. However, the persistence through the scientific method allowed for these failures to be redacted and instead the values of scientific method were upheld. The main idea that we can see present here is that for the role of science to be embedded heavily in the world, it comes from going through it from a younger age. Being able to wade through a world of logical fallacies and destroy them through a process of scientific experimentation through multiple trials in which proper conclusions are upheld by everyone in a community is shown in the video. Without the use of proper evidence to back one's claims, the scientific method itself fails if the claims are nothing but illogical and unbackable. We need to realize from a young age how important it is to nurture a community to appreciate the role of science and to make sure that we do not fall prey to established fallacies and wrongs. This video clearly shows that and establishes that. In the second excursion, I found the main points of this entire summary to be one hundred percent accurate and well established. The existing logical fallacies in the community were challenged by a man who had scientifically approached them under a skeptic view which turned out to be true. The failure of critical thinking and the immovable community is a prime example of a scientifically inaccurate set of beliefs followed by the community which then turned out to be defeated by the use of scientific thinking and method by a man. This man challenged the views of religion by being an anti - trinitarian and challenged science through his discoveries in the pulmonary sciences of blood. He was venerated by many people in the community and was arrested, threatened to be killed and disproved. The masses represent a community that is blinded by a rooted belief in logical fallacies that have turned the community into an immovable, backwards community. The work of a skeptic is not an easy one in such a place. Many people by the names of Harvey and other significant men underwent the same harrows that Servetus himself underwent. The thing is, all those opposed to him called him satan and unnatural because he was challenging the very base of their existence. He was challenging the very essence of the community and people could not bear that and did everything they could to vanquish him rather than to approach his words in a scientific manner. Years later we sit here and see that he himself was right and that he had made advancements by taking on the hard role of skeptic, which we have seen in history many times. Time and time again. I agree with the point that it is hard to be a skeptic in a world where everyone is challenging your beliefs and making sure that you cannot succeed. But, if not for these skeptics we cannot make scientific advancement like the community of Servetus was unable to do. He serves to be an example of what it means to be a skeptic and just how important it is despite the difficulties.
