Tweens HackHealth: Working With School Librarians to Engage Disadvantaged Youth in Health Entrepreneurship

We present our methodological approach to and lessons learned from an NLM-funded project in which we are working with school librarians to develop and implement after-school programs to engage disadvantaged youth in becoming health entrepreneurs. We aim to increase their interest in science/health, their health literacy, and their health-related self-efficacy.

Lightning Talk for ASIS&T 2013 SIG-USE Symposium

This proposed Ignite talk will introduce an NLM-funded project that we have undertaken to explore these interdependencies by engaging disadvantaged youth in: (a) conducting scientific inquiry in order to maintain their health and/or prevent/manage disease; (b) acting as health information intermediaries for their family and/or community members; and (c) taking action based on what they learn. Our project focuses on tweens as these tend to be formative years in several respects, including the beginning of their transition to adulthood, their growing independence, the budding of their career interests, and the continued development of their health behaviors and information seeking skills.
