Arts & Humanities Classroom Support

Support & Resources for enhancing instruction in the classroom

What is Classroom Support and what does it mean to me?

0102 Arts & Humanities Classroom Support covers a wide range of technology available for use in the classroom in order to enhance both the teaching and learning experience.

There are three basic areas of support we offer:

Installed technology classrooms are general purpose classrooms equipped with a guaranteed minimum level of permanent equipment permanently installed in the room. This includes a computer, DVD/VCR combination unit, audio system, and projector. Many rooms have additional equipment such as a laserdisc deck, audio cassete decks, or slide projectors. Most rooms also have document cameras. For these rooms, we are more than happy to provide orientation sessions as the rooms are available to be booked for them, or support at the beginning of your class. Important note: teaching assistants are not automatically added to card access systems. To request this access, please contact the scheduling office at x48243 or by email, <schedule@umd.edu>.

GPCs with cart support are ordinary classrooms that have been designated by the campuswide support organization as having a high need for technology that have not been upgraded to installed technology rooms. ARHU Classroom Support is responsible for a subset of these, which we will deliver to, set up in, and retrieve carts from when requested. Carts also have the same guaranteed minimum equipment as installed technology classrooms.

The instructional equipment loaner program is a service provided by the college for faculty, staff, and graduate students teaching courses within the scope of the college. Any ARHU instructor can request support for an event meeting anywhere on campus regardless of location, though we recommend securing cart support instead if it is an option. Equipment available through this program includes laptops (Mac and PC), projectors, DVD players, VHS players, and external speakers. We also have the capacity to connect your personal equipment to the system.

Requesting support

To request support in a technology enhanced classroom, we recommend calling the campus classroom support single point of contact - x48522 - to ensure that your request is routed to the correct local support office; there are at least 19 groups responsible for sharing the support load for the over 170 technology classrooms on campus.

Cart support is handled in much the same way, although you are more than welcome to submit those requests directly to us; for those rooms we support, we can handle requests directly - for all others, we can usually forward your request appropriately.

As mentioned earlier, Instructional Equipment is provided through our office, so all requests or support questions should be directed to our support office. We can be reached by phone at x50830, by email at <arhu-itequip@umd.edu>, or by completing our online request form: http://www.arhu.umd.edu/tech/classroomsupport/request
